Call Senator Portman and Rep. LaTourette for nutrition assistance programs
Hunger costs Ohio more than $6.97 billion in 2010. But Ohio can make a difference in the debate on how we prevent hunger-related health care costs, lost educational achievement and worker productivity.  Ohio Congressman Steve LaTourette and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown has been named to the Agriculture Conference Committee that, by close of business this Friday, will be submitting recommendations from the House and Senate passed versions for the FY 2012 Agriculture Appropriations.  Ohio Senator Rob Portman serves on the "Super Committee" charged with submitting recommendations to Congress on $1.2 trillion in revenue or cuts by November 23, 2011, only 8 days away.

Senator Portman and Congressman LaTourette need to hear from you on how important it is that Ohio's modest nutritional safety net remains whole.

Call Congressmen LaTourette at (800) 447-0529 today and urge his support for adopting the funding levels for nutrition assistance programs contained in the Senate-passed substitute of the FY2012 Agriculture Appropriations legislation (H.R. 2112). Call Senator Portman at (800) 205-6446 and urge him to fully fund nutrition assistance programs during debt ceiling negotiations. Tell them that at a time when a record one in six Ohioans are facing hunger and millions of workers have lost their jobs, their homes, and have seen their families' economic security slip away, any cuts to these programs would be devastating.

Join Progress Ohio as they return to Sen. Portman's office (37 W. Broad St) On Thursday, November 10th at 11:00 am to demand a meeting with him, and occupy his office until one is arranged. They will then conduct a demonstration outside of the office protesting not having the meeting (i.e.- banner, signs, etc.).

Event  on Movement Building and the First Amendment-Cleveland
Join the ACLU of Ohio, members of the Occupy Movement, and constitutional and criminal defense attorneys in a discussion about movement-building and the First Amendment. This country was built on dissent, yet permit schemes and “reasonable” time, place and manner restrictions have increasingly restrained free speech. Now, proposed legislation may chill the use of social media to organize dissent.

The event will be held in Thursday, November 10 from 7:00-8:00 pm at MaxWohl Civil Liberties Center, 4506 Chester Ave., Cleveland.  This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available. To RSVP, email contact@acluohio.org or call (216) 472-2220
